Bulgaria's Nationalist Mouth-Piece Owner Runs for Mayor

Politics | September 18, 2007, Tuesday // 00:00

The owner of Skat TV channel, known as the mouth-piece of Ataka nationalist party, will run for mayor of the Black Sea town of Burgas, it was officially announced on Tuesday.

"Valeri Simeonov is a man, who was stubborn and consistent enough to make Skat the most patriotic TV channel for the last fifteen years," Ataka leader Volen Siderov said at a press conference.

Simeonov will also lead the party ticket for municipal councillors, followed by two of his news anchors - Valentin Kassabov and Stoyan Ivanov.

Skat TV channel caused quite a stir last year after being mysteriously knocked out two days ahead of the presidential run-off, where nationalist leader Volen Siderov faced off Socialist Georgi Parvanov.

Even after Siderov lost the presidential elections, it remained unclear what had caused the cut.

Skat TV channel was the only source of information about the goings-on in the Ataka party at that time as national media outlets all too obviously turned their backs on news about the nationalist runner.

Volen Siderov himself tried to steer clear of the scandal, saying he did not know about the problem till the very last minute.
