Bulgaria: Who Cares about Education Anymore? Photo by Nadya Kotseva (Sofia Photo Agency)

This week's Thursday was marked by the protest of Bulgaria's young scientists, who gathered to complain about the miserable state funding. The boys and girls made their protest a very picturesque one by handing out unflattering awards to those in power.

But it is not the mere fact of insufficient funds for their education and future development as promising scientists. It is the fact that the miserable money spent on them forces the young people to flee the country, seeking better life.

Many of them have already finished their education and came to Bulgaria to work for their homeland's brighter future, but those on charge of mother Bulgaria's management seem to be hostile, stingy and worst of all envious of the young scientists' life achievements so far and their boldness to return home.

"I did not come here to rally for higher wages. I came here because Bulgaria's education and science will be soon dead," said Evgeni Popov from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The guy is terribly right about that. Insufficient state funding is slowly, but steadily killing the education. In no time the result will be a first-page picture in the newspapers of Bulgaria's education system's dead corpse in the morgue room, which will eventually lead to mobs of ignorant young fools haunting the streets and picking their noses.

If this is what these in power want, they do not need to wish on a shooting star to get their wish. It is already becoming fulfilled.

There is a saying circulating among the elderly and the wise Bulgarians and it goes like this "A lowbrow nation breeds a weak country".

I guess it is time for the politicians to use their brains and either start encouraging the young Bulgarians to stay here or coin an alternative saying. It would probably sound something like that: "Careless politicians breed a lowbrow nation".
