Traffic Accident in Bulgaria Kills 1, Blocks European Road

A traffic accident between the towns of Vratsa and Mezdra in northwestern Bulgaria left a 22-year-old traffic cop dead, injuring four more people and blocking an important European road.

Initial assessments show that the Mazda vehicle driven by the policeman could have been overtaking another vehicle when he crashed into a car coming from the opposite direction.

The traffic policeman, who had joined the department only recently, died on the spot, while a pregnant woman that was in the other car will most likely lose the foetus.

The driver in the second car is in critical condition, while a 12-year-old was also taken to hospital with concussion.

The incident has caused a tailback more than a kilometre long, with more than 50 international haul trucks, which use the road to get to get to the ferry in Oryahovo, forced to wait for the investigation to conclude and the debris to be cleared.
