Rally Sliven in Bulgaria was abandoned on Sunday after the death of Ukrainian pilot Andriy Alexandrov.

Alexandrov, competing on a Subaru Impreza, lost control during the 12th special stage, and dies on the spot.

Alexandrov's wife, who was his co-pilot during the race, was taken to hospital, but her life is not in any apparent danger.

The organisers of the event, which is part of the FIA European Rally Cup (East), are still debating how to award the points for the incomplete competition.

The Bulgarian racing crew of Dimitar Iliev and Yanaki Yanakiev had a 28-seconds lead over their closest pursuers after the first day of racing.
