The nomination of Bulgaria's men basketball team for Sofia mayor aims to strengthen the influence of the Democratic Party in the municipal council of the capital, reports say.
Konstantin Papazov, better known as Titi, announced on Monday he would run for mayor of capital Sofia in October's local elections as an independent candidate, backed by the Democratic Party, and thus became the first challenger to the polls top scorer, incumbent Boyko Borisov.
Right-wing politicians, however, suspect that the true goal behind his nomination is to secure the re-election of municipal councillors from the Democratic Party, 24 Hours daily learnt.
The party currently holds control over two municipality-owned companies, dealing with the security of public buildings and streetlights. It is also linked to the biggest temptation among municipality-owned companies - Sofijski imoti (Sofia properties), which was headed four years ago by Toshko Dobrev, a municipal councillor on the ticket of the Democratic Party.
Papazov denied having other aim than the defeat of current mayor Boyko Borisov.
"I would be glad to hear a piece of friendly advice by Boyko Borisov, who has two years of experience as mayor behind his back," Papazov told the daily.
Pollsters are not upbeat about the chances of the highly emotional Papazov in the upcoming vote, saying he does not match the profile of the typical right-wing candidate to face off Borissov.
