The coach of Bulgaria's men basketball team, who will run for Sofia mayor in October, will pave the way to rather than challenge the re-election of the popular incumbent, a pollster says.

Konstantin "Titi" Papazov announced on Monday he would run for mayor of capital Sofia in October's local elections as an independent candidate, backed by the Democratic Party, and thus became the first challenger to the polls top scorer incumbent Boyko Borisov.

"Konstantin Papazov will only scatter the votes of the electorate and secure an easy first-round victory of Boyko Borisov," Antoni Galabov told Darik Radio.

Despite being part of the civic committee that nominated Socialist president Georgi Parvanov for a second term last year, Papazov claims he is targeting all rightist-leaning voters in the city.

Pollsters, however, say the highly emotional Papazov does not match the profile of the typical right-wing candidate, who will directly oppose Borissov.

"Papazov is a very honest and open men, but he is not the kind of candidate right-wing supporters could identify with and vote for," Galabov said.
