The coach of Bulgaria's men basketball team, Konstantin "Titi" Papazov, said on Monday he would run for mayor of capital Sofia in October's local elections as an independent candidate.

"I will run for mayor because I have a civic position," Papazov told bTV channel, dismissing the media speculation from the previous days, which painted him as the nominee of either the ruling Socialists or hard-line rightist party Democrats for Strong Bulgaria.

He becomes the first challenger to popular incumbent Boyko Borisov, who announced his intention to run for a second term earlier this month.

Despite being part of the civic committee that nominated Socialist president Georgi Parvanov for a second term last year, Papazov said he was targeting all rightist-leaning voters in the city.

His nomination was due to be announced on Thursday, after Bulgaria's last European Championships qualifying game against Hungary, but Papazov said he had to put an end to the media speculation.

It remains to be seen how his foray into politics will interfere with his duties as coach of the Bulgarian basketball team in the unlikely event that it qualifies for the European Championship final tournament in Spain, which would coincide with the start of the local elections campaign in September.
