Popular Internet telephony service Skype said it has fixed the software glitch that prevented millions of its customers from logging on.

"Hello friends, take a deep breath. Skype is back to normal," the company said in one of the blogs on its website.

The bug, which exists in all versions of the Skype client published since 2003, has only surfaced on Thursday and it took two days to fix.

The company said it would offer additional details on Monday.

The problem hit as many as 220 million users of the service, many of them small businesses that have given up their landlines, The New York Times said.

Skype is the leading provider of voice over IP protocol telephony in the world and is owned by online trading firm Ebay.

The service allows its users to make calls via the Internet - free of charge to other Skype members and charging small fees to call landline or mobile numbers.
