Taliban Say Talks to Free Korean Hostages Fail

A spokesman for the Taliban insurgents said on Saturday that the talks with Afghani authorities for the release of 19 Korean hostages have failed and their fate was now being decided by the faction's leaders.

"The talks ended without any result and have failed as our main demand was not accepted," Qari Mohammad Yousuf was quoted as saying.

The Taliban demanded the release of prisoners held by authorities in Kabul, a request Afghani President Hamid Karzai dismissed.

Two male hostages have already been killed, while two women were released on Monday. The Taliban have threatened to kill the remaining 19, most of them female, if their demand was not granted.

The Korean church volunteers were seized last month in the Ghazni province as they travelled by bus from Kabul to Kandahar.
