Politics as Business

Bulgaria: Politics as Business Photo by Nadya Kotseva (Sofia Photo Agency)

Five weeks ago, the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) was so desperate to pick up a new leader unmarred by the failures of his predecessors, they went with a virtually unknown coffee trader.

And it made sense in a way - if you want to sell your ideas to the public, especially with local elections on the horizon, get a good salesman to do the pitch.

But now, with the preparations for the local polls in full swing, it looks like new leader Yurukov is less concerned with selling the party and its ideas to the voters and more with selling the party, period.

In the past couple of weeks, Yurukov met up with leaders of other parties to talk about cooperation before and after the elections, only to end up more isolated than when he started.

Praising Ivan Kostov, he gave some a ray of hope the split with Kostov's hardliners could finally be mended, only to infuriate the former PM by meeting with Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov.

Borissov would love to have UDF on his side, adding its past glories to his current high rating, but he won't like the overtures Yurukov has made towards the ethnic Turk MRF, either.

The MRF, of course, is too interested in maximising its own leverage and has little use for the crumbling UDF.

Yurukov might be a good businessman and merely be looking for the ideal merger partner to deliver the best returns to UDF shareholders (the politicians, not the voters).

The problem is that while he does that, what UDF's long-suffering supporters see is the party whoring itself to the highest bidder.

Yurukov apparently cares more for politicking than for policies. If he keeps on the same track, it won't take long before he doesn't have what to sell.
