Wedding Bells Cheer up Flood-Hit Town in Bulgaria

Society | August 17, 2007, Friday // 00:00

Eleven days after the devastating floods and with the sky blue and clear, the town of Tsar Kaloyan had its first occasion to celebrate as two of its citizens said the marriage vows.

Mustafa Bajti, 25, and Ava Karasyuleyman, 20, picked August 17 as the date of their marriage as early as last year and stuck to the schedule even though the bride's house has been severely damaged by the deadly torrential rains.

The town of Tsar Kaloyan was the worst-hit by the floods in north-eastern Bulgaria, which followed torrential rains at the beginning of August. Eight people were killed.

Life in the small town is slowly recovering its normal pace, but the state of emergency will not be lifted before August 20 because of the lack of drinking water.

The prosecutor's office in the town of Razgrad has launched an investigation into the causes of the floods, which nearly wiped out the town.
