Pop Folk Big Shot Forays into Bulgaria's Politics

Politics | August 16, 2007, Thursday // 00:00

The founder and CEO of the largest producer of pop folk music in Bulgaria will lead the ticket of the right-wing party GERB for municipal councillors in the southern town of Dimitrovgrad.

Mitko Dimitrov, an engineer by education, founded Payner company in 1990 and built glorious careers for a long list of pop folk singers. He also owns the satellite pop folk music channel Planeta, launched in 2002, and Planeta Folk TV channel, launched in March this year.

The company central office and production facilities are based in the town of Dimitrovgrad.

Polls suggest that GERB, a new right-wing party led by Boyko Borisov, the mayor of Sofia, may do very well in the upcoming local elections in October.
