Second Oil Slick Mars Bulgarian Black Sea Coast

A second oil slick in three days has been reported off the Bulgarian Black Sea coast near the town of Byala, 40 kilometres south of Varna.

The slick, close to one kilometre long and 200 metres wide, was first sighted by a passing freight ship late on Tuesday evening.

Emergency crews were dispatched by the Transport and Environment ministries for clean-up operations.

Earlier this week, an 800-metre oil slick was reported near Galata cape, located several kilometres south of Varna.

It was likely caused by one of the ships that left Varna harbour, which dumped close to 100 kilograms of oil into the sea, experts said.

It has been since cleaned up.

The two incidents come during the peak of the summer season, when several million tourists, both local and foreign, visit the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, the country's biggest tourist attraction.
