Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov's GERB party has become the most powerful political organization in Bulgaria, according to a poll by Alpha Research.

A total of 22.5 % of respondents would back GERB or Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria in the upcoming general election.

The governing Bulgarian Socialist Party BSP is second with 17.8 per cent, followed by the Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) with 6.9 per cent, and the nationalist Ataka with 6.7 per cent.

Support is lower for the centrist National Movement for Stability and Progress (NDSP), the United Democratic Forces (UDF), the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB), and the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (VMRO).

In June 2005, Bulgarian voters renewed the National Assembly. The Coalition for Bulgaria, which included the BSP, secured 82 seats, followed by the NDSP with 53 lawmakers. In August, the two main parties, along with the MRF, agreed to set-up a coalition administration with Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev as prime minister.

In 2006, Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov assembled the centre-right, pro-European GERB.
