Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi has scolded his son for admitting that the Bulgarian medics, held behind the bars for eight years, have been tortured.

"The father and the son have exchanged a number of furious letters in the wake of Seif Al-Islam statement," the online edition of "Libya Today" reported, citing well-informed sources.

Muammar Qaddafi has insisted that his son, who is chairman of the Qaddafi foundation, stop making statements, which only benefit the Bulgarian nurses, the report said.

The Libyan leader advised his son to stop making favours to "the criminals and the enemies of the North African country by circulating unconfirmed rumours, which can be used to sue the Jamahiriya".

The sources did not specify whether the letters were sent and received in secret, but claimed Al-Islam promised not to repeat the same mistake.

Libya officially denied on Saturday the statement of leader Qaddafi's son, who said that the five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor were tortured in prison, where they spent more than eight years.

Earlier in the week Seif al-Islam told Al Jazeera TV channel that the medics were jolted with electricity and were threatened that their families will be persecuted.
