Bulgaria Introduces Hotline 112 for All Distress Calls by 2009
Politics | August 2, 2007, ThursdayCitizens won't have to remember several emergency numbers anymore, as all calls going to the ambulances, police and fire brigades will be directed to telephone number 112. The mountain rescue teams and the Red Cross will also be covered at a later stage.
Emergency response units are expected to be relieved, because the centres will be able to sift out pranks that currently account for 80% of the calls.
A pilot project was launched in Southwestern Bulgaria in the summer of this year. Citizens may dial 0800 20-112 free of charge and alert about natural disasters they have witnessed or become a victim of. All incoming calls are automatically registered and recorded.
