Four people were killed after two US television helicopters collided Friday in the air over the state of Phoenix while covering a police chase.

The crash, which involved machines from an ABC network affiliate and an independent station was broadcast live on local television in the state of Arizona.

The flying camera crews were covering a high-speed police pursuit of someone suspected of stealing a city truck, then jumping into at least one other vehicle.

Television images showed thick black smoke pouring from the scene of the crash in a city park.

The suspect chased was cornered by police in a nearby building.
