Indonesia quickly cancelled a tsunami warning after a 6,9-magnitude earthquake in the east of the country on Thursday, the BBC reported.
The earthquake struck at 1.40 pm local time (5.40 am GMT) in the Molucca Sea, some 220 kilometres north of the city of Ternate at a depth of 44,6 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
Indonesia lies on several fault lines that are part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is one of the most quake-prone countries in the world.
In December 2004, a massive earthquake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, including 160,000 people in Indonesia's Aceh province.
