Sofia Makes Sarkozy Couple, Ferrero-Waldner Honorary Citizens
Politics | July 24, 2007, Tuesday
Sofia councillors unanimously approved on Tuesday a proposal to make French president Nikolas Sarkozy, his spouse Cecilia and EU's external relations commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner honorary citizens of the city.
The trio were the key figures in recent weeks as the bloc, which Bulgaria joined in January, stepped up its efforts to free six Bulgarian medics held in Libya.
The proposal, authored by mayor Boyko Borisov and city council chief Vladimir Kisyov, suggested that the trio deserved the recognition for their consistency, tenacity and determination to see the Bulgarian medics return home.
"We had to show our appreciation for the efforts of these people to return the Bulgarian medics home," Kisyov told reporters after the municipal council meeting.

I understand the significance of the case, and the people's wish to thank everybody who helped resolving this inhuman trial. However, making Sarkozy honorary citizens is a bad joke and a slap in the face of all the people who fought for the medics' release since so many years.
So many bad things have happened during the trial to the jailed medics, their friends and relatives, why do these newly-elected (Mr Sarkozy) and never-elected (Mrs Sarkozy) now exploit the medics' fate for their own populist purposes? Western media reports even suggest Mrs Sarkozy's actions might have jeopardised the release in its very late stage.
Unfortunately the populist Sofia mayor picked up the story, acting like the "big" politicians' gofer.

The French who dont like Sarkozy say he simply hijacked the release of the nurses when everything was almost over due to the efforts of other people like the EU commissioner Bonita Benita.
It doesnt surprise me, given that that in 1944 le GГ©nГ©ral de Gaulle arrived in Paris from Algeria, stood up on an American or a British tank and proclaimed that the French liberated themselves;)
but even if it is true the fact is that the Sarkozys did finish the job, and rather quickly. Bat Boiko can also make honorary citizen the Sheikh of Qatar who apparently played a very important role in the release. The important thing is that the case is over and our people are finally free.

Uchak,
How about Mme Sarkozy? She is sexy too and will be 50 later this year;) Poor Nicolas must have some difficult moments with her.
CГ©cilia: Cheri, can I take your plane for 2-3 days? I have to go to Libya and get the Bulgarian nurses from there.
Nicolas: Mais cheri, I have to go to Libya on Wednesday.
CГ©cilia: Merci cheri, you are so sweet - Ill be back on Tuesday evening - of course I wont let you to go to Libya on a camel. Ciao, kisses, see you on Tuesday!

Maybe many people tried to rescue the medic in nine very very long years... But they didn't succeed.
Now that Sarkozy made it, it is very easy to say "yes, that wasn't that difficult, Sarkozy doens't deserve anything". With Sarkozy the medics had to wait two monthes, with the other they had to wait 9 years. That is just a difference !
"Western media reports even suggest Mrs Sarkozy's actions might have jeopardised the release in its very late stage" Western media doesn't like France coming back on stage and leading things, they much prefer a sleeping president like Chirac, someone who doesn't do much. Since hi sArrival, Sakozy already change a lot of things for Europe and France, that must be very annoying for those who didn't do anything before.
I am very happy that these medics were freed and i am pride that my country could help for it.

The problem is Resops - that Sarkozys contribution is being somewhat over-egged. His contribution was something that went on top of lots of building work by various diplomats, ambassadors, officials and other associated purveyors of the tools of diplomacy. He helped, he is one of many - he is not a hero.
This a good result for these people that should have been freed so long ago. It is also, sadly, a good result for Libya - and with the financial benefits they are reaping (indirectly, but they are none the less) it could also be said that capturing foreign workers and effectively ransoming them is a really good way of getting aid from richer western states.
