Sofia councillors unanimously approved on Tuesday a proposal to make French president Nikolas Sarkozy, his spouse Cecilia and EU's external relations commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner honorary citizens of the city.

The trio were the key figures in recent weeks as the bloc, which Bulgaria joined in January, stepped up its efforts to free six Bulgarian medics held in Libya.

The proposal, authored by mayor Boyko Borisov and city council chief Vladimir Kisyov, suggested that the trio deserved the recognition for their consistency, tenacity and determination to see the Bulgarian medics return home.

"We had to show our appreciation for the efforts of these people to return the Bulgarian medics home," Kisyov told reporters after the municipal council meeting.
