Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev thanked the European Union's institutions for backing Bulgaria's quest to return its medics home from Libya.
"The fate of the medics ceased to be an issue between Bulgaria and Libya, it became an issue between the EU and Libya," he told reporters at the Sofia airport after the seven Bulgarian medics touched home soil.
"The stance taken by the EU, the European Parliament, the council of foreign ministers, the council of the EU - all that served as a catalyst for the efforts to bring the nurses home," he went on to say.
Bulgaria's cabinet will meet for an extraordinary session on Wednesday to discuss in what way the government can help the medics in the future.
