Ivan Kostov was reelected by an overwhelming majority leader of the die-hard rightist party Democrats for Strong Bulgaria two months after resigning over an MEP vote fiasco.

The former prime minister, renowned for his uncompromising stance towards the Socialist party, vowed to revive voters' confidence in the party during the next term and a half at the helm.

Kostov secured a new term by a large margin - 726 votes to 10 and 18 abstentions.

"The party leadership and its leader overrated DSB chances of success at the MEP vote," Kostov said. In his words the party has assigned itself a task beyond its abilities - to deal with the crisis in the right wing.

The executive leadership of DSB party resigned on May 21, a day after failing to make the 5,66% threshold necessary to win even a single MEP seat at Bulgaria's first European election.
