Members of the Bulgarian rightist party United Democratic forces and eco-activists from the Zelen Alians (Green Alliance) organization gathered Thursday to discuss the issue with the country's steel-making mill Kremikovtzi that pollutes Sofia.

At the meeting the party members and the greens decided MEP Yane Yanev to introduce a draft document, proposing to impose a moratorium on Kremikovtzi, so that the mill be closed until it gets a complex working permit from the Environment Ministry.

Kremikovtzi pollutes the whole Sofia city and the country has not done anything to prevent it, Yanev said at the meeting.

The moratorium should enter into force as soon as possible, because the problem cannot be delayed any longer, Yanev was explicit.

The mill pollutes the air and the soil not only of the neighbouring residential areas, but the whole city, the vice chairman of the Zelen Alians organization Atanas Cheresharov said.

Kremokovtsi impedes Sofia's evolution and the city has started expanding its territory towards the Vitosha Mountain, Cheresharov added.
