Libya's Foreign Minister said Wednesday the ball is in the court of the European Union and Bulgaria over the fate of the six medics after the highest judicial body in the North African country commuted their death verdicts to life imprisonment, BTA reported.

Minister Abd al-Rahman Muhammad Shalgham added the case was "not closed" as Tripoli is still waiting guarantees regarding the treatment of the hundreds of HIV infected children.

"There are coming negotiations on the engagements previously undertaken by Europe," the official explained.

"The matter of time is important and should be considered by both sides and not only by Libya," he added.

The six medics, who have been on death row since 2004 over accusation of infecting more than 400 Libyan children with HIV, could serve out their sentences in Bulgaria, as the two countries have an extradition treaty and the Palestinian was recently granted Bulgarian citizenship.
