Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov and German MEP Manfred Weber criticised on Tuesday the Bulgarian government for its failure to lay the foundations for the future utilisation of EU funds.

Earlier this month, Weber asked the EU to suspend payment of accession aid funds to both Bulgaria and Romania for their limited progress in their fight against organised crime.

Bulgaria's failure to show it can curtail corruption raises doubts as to whether the funds will reach their intended destination, Weber said in a video-chat with Borissov.

The mayor of Sofia, the informal leader of the GERB party and an outspoken critic of the Socialists-led ruling coalition, has used the opportunity to lay into the cabinet.

Bulgarian entrepreneurs and the municipalities need the money like "a breath of air," Borissov said.

"It is not our fault that there was no appointment of a new economy and energy minister for such a long time," he went on to say.

Bulgarian lawmakers are still to confirm the nominations for justice and economy ministers, whose predecessors quit a month and a half ago.
