PM: Re-Confirmation of Bulgarian Medics' Death Sentences was Expected

Politics | July 11, 2007, Wednesday // 00:00

The Libyan Court's decision on the fate of the five Bulgarian medics and the Palestinian doctor was expected, Bulgaria's Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev said on Wednesday.

The whole development of the process was not a surprise so the re-confirmation of the death sentences was not a surprise also, he added.

"You know Bulgaria's position on the innocence of the nurses and the Palestinian Ashraf, and this position is backed by strong evidence," Stanishev commented.

He assessed positively the fact that the Libyan Foreign Minister Abd al-Rahman Muhammad Shalgam will summon another legal body, the Supreme Judicial Council, which is scheduled to meet on Monday, and could overturn today's court ruling or reduce the sentences for the six.
