Hans-Gert Poettering, President of the European Parliament, expressed Wednesday his concern of the re-confirmed death sentences of the five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor, jailed in Libya.
"I am really worried after I heard the news, which is sad and terrible for all, especially for the nurses and the doctor and for their friends and realities, Poettering said at the sitting of the parliament.
Portugal's PM JosГ© SГіcrates, whose country took the presidency of the European Union in July, expressed his deep regret upon hearing the news, but said he believed the case will have a "happy end".
"I am saddened by the news for the Bulgarian nurses, but we all hope for a good end," SГіcrates said.
Despite the confirmed death sentence, European Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security Franco Frattini said he strongly hopes the Libyan Supreme Court of Justice rules in favour of the medics.
"The situation now gets even more complicated. I would really love to say that I see the positive outcome, but sadly I don't see it," Frattini added.
The Justice and Security Commissioner also said his reaction if the Tripoli Court's decision is absolutely negative.
"We are sorry that such a decision was taken, but I am convinced a way out of this situation will be found," EC president Jose Manuel Barroso said. He vowed once again the bloc, the EU Parliament and the European Commission's determination to put all efforts to save the five nurses and the Palestinian doctor from death.
