Bulgaria's centre-right Union of Free Democrats (UFD) elected Milan Milanov on Saturday to replace founder Stefan Sofianski as party leader at a congress in Veliko Tarnovo.

He won the vote against Radoslav Katsarov, with the rest of the party's new executive leadership to be elected later in the day.

UFD's congress will continue on Sunday, when delegates will discuss new policy initiatives and potential alliances for the local elections in fall.

Milan Milanov, 61, is one of the leading medical authorities in the country, serving in the past as executive director of Sofia's Pirogov emergency hospital and the Bulgarian Doctors' Union.

He is currently serving as a municipal councillor in Sofia, where he is deputy chairman of the council, as well as a member of the healthcare, infrastructure and ethics committees.
