Four candidates are eying the helm of the right-wing Union of Democratic Forces after its leader Petar Stoyanov resigned in the wake of the party's failure to grab a seat in Bulgaria's first MEP vote.

The candidates are Stefan Ivanov, Jordan Bakalov, Plamen Yurukov and Drago Mihalev.

The current leadership of the right-wing Union of Democratic Forces will stay in office until UDF extraordinary conference, due on July 15, elects new members.

The Union of Democratic Forces is the core of the United Democratic Forces, made up of remnants of the once ruling rightist UDF.

The United Democratic Forces was until two years ago the biggest player in the right-wing, but then got plagued by crises and election defeats.

Former Bulgarian president Petar Stoyanov hoped till last that his party would gain enough support to win one MEP seat, but final results showed that UDF support was a long way off the 5,66% threshold.
