A train of the London Underground derailed on Thursday morning between Mile End and Bethnal Green, leaving hundreds of terrified commuters, who were immediately evacuated.
Some passengers, who initially thought they were in the midst of a terror attack, were stuck underground for more than two hours as commuters were led into a dark tunnel to be evacuated.
Six carriages from the westbound Central Line train came off the tracks at 9.04 am after apparently striking an object left in its path.
Five people were taken to the local hospital, but none of them was reported seriously injured. About 20 people were treated at the scene for minor injuries including panic attacks and breathing difficulties.
"The derailment has been described as relatively minor and it would be wrong to speculate on the cause. There's nothing to suggest it was a terrorist incident," Superintendent Phil Trendall said.
