The young man, accused of stabbing to death a Sofia taxi driver at the beginning of the year, was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Sofia City Court on Thursday.
He got a milder sentence after admitting his guilt in court on Wednesday. Peykov will also have to pay BGN 70,000 to the family of the victim. He may appeal the sentence within 15 days.
Georgi Peykov, 28, murdered taxi driver Emil Emilov on February 9. Peykov's seven years of imprisonment is the minimum verdict under local legislation.
Peykov made full written confessions on the very same day when he was arrested less than 12 hours after committing the crime. He even took the police to the place where he had thrown the knife he used for stabbing the taxi driver.
Peykov hired the cab in downtown Sofia to take him to Lyulin neighbourhood. When he saw the bill of BGN 15, he realised he didn't have the money and tried to escape. The driver Emil Emilov attempted to stop him but the killer took out a knife, stabbed him in the stomach and fled the scene.
Emilov died minutes later, still driving the car, which at the moment of his death bumped into a street bin.
The murderer was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.
The murder triggered massive protests of taxi drivers in the capital, who demanded legislative guarantees for their security at work.
