French gendarmes arrested five suspected members of Basque terrorist organisation ETA in two separate police actions, Spanish media reported on Tuesday.

Two suspects were arrested in the suburbs of Paris during a routine check, just hours after three people were arrested in France's Basque country near the border with Spain, daily El Pais said.

The first three ETA suspects were arrested following a joint operation by the French gendarmerie and Spain's civil guard.

The trio was travelling by car and were found to be carrying 165 kilograms of explosives and several firearms. Police suspect they were planning to carry out a car bomb attack.

The arrests mean that 11 ETA suspects have been arrested since June 5, when the organisation announced the end of a 15-month truce with Spanish authorities, whom they accused of failing to make any concessions in peace talks.

Spanish police seized a car packed with explosives and a bomb-making manual in Basque near the border with Portugal on June 21, while on Saturday, the airport in popular holiday spot Ibiza has been closed down over a bomb threat.
