There are some lapses and mistakes in the EU assessment report on Bulgaria to be presented on Wednesday, the Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev announced.

"I was surprised to find mistakes in the facts stated in such an important document. They, however, turn out to be quite serious," Velchev said.

One of the statements in the report reads that a newly adopted law does not provide the existence of constantly working Supreme Council of justice, which contradict the facts.

"There is also a mistake in the statistic data presented concerning the sentences imposed to criminals for money laundering. A total of five sentences have been mentioned in the report, as the real figures are eight," the chief prosecutor explained.

"I hope the mistakes will be corrected," Velchev added.

Nevertheless, the criticisms that are likely to be levelled at Bulgaria concerning the organized crime and corruption fight are well-founded and quite reasonable. We continue working on solving these problems," the official said.

The progress report on the state of justice, corruption and organised crime in the country is to be presented later in the day by the Head Representative of the European Commission in Bulgaria Michael Humphreys.

Latest unofficial reports say that the EU is unlikely to propose any safeguard clauses.

The European Commission previously said that the report would not consider a possible withholding of EU funds either.

The report has been prepared by the Secretary General of the institution, Catherine Day and her team.
