Libya's Supreme Court gave the go-ahead to the final appeal of the five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor, sentenced to death for infecting children with HIV.

Following a nearly three-hour session, the court withdrew for one-hour break.

This hearing will be their final appeal in a case, which has sparked an outcry in Bulgaria, the whole European Union and the United States.

The court could confirm, cancel or change the already imposed sentences but it could not order a retrial.

If the judges decide to revoke the verdicts then the case will be at issue upon its merits.

If the sentences are confirmed, the trial will be considered by the magistrates of the Libyan Supreme Council, which has the right to change the decisions of the court.

The third possible outcome is for the court to set a new date for delivering its final decision.

All three Bulgarian lawyers and the Libyan defender of the medics will be present in the court hall but the defendants will not attend the sitting, recent reports claim.

The Libyan Prosecutor's Office has already officially demanded confirmation of the medics' death sentences after submitting a hundred-page-long document, which present evidence to back the claim that the defendants are guilty.

The five nurses and the doctor are charged with deliberately infecting 426 Libyan children with HIV in Benghazi hospital. The accused are put behind bars in Judeyda prison for more than eight years now.
