The mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg announced he leaves the Republican Party and switches to "unaffiliated".
"Although my plans for the future haven't changed, I believe this brings my affiliation into alignment with how I have led and will continue to lead our city," Bloomberg said.
The step made by the 65-year-old billionaire former CEO will be interpreted as an intention of running for US president although he denies such statements claiming he is to leave politics after the end of his term in 2009.
With an estimated worth of more than 5 billion dollars, he could easily finance an independent presidential bid at the elections in 2008.
The speculations intensified after the NY mayor recently started travelling out of the state, discussing national policy problems.
Bloomberg changes his political orientation for second time after he switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party in 2001 for his first mayoral run.
