Turkish Navy Sailors Fined over Bulgaria Beach Fracas

Crime | June 19, 2007, Tuesday // 00:00

The sailors from a Turkish Navy ship, who triggered a melee on a beach in the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Burgas, will be punished with a fine, the district prosecutor's ruled.

The sum of the fine is still to be cleared.

The prosecutors decided that no crime has been committed.

The clash occurred on Saturday and was caused by one of the sailors, who persistently attempted to chat up a local girl on the beach, until her boyfriend intervened.

The other sailors and two male friends of the Bulgarian couple got involved later, and only rapid intervention by lifeguards and police officers prevented the incident from escalating further, the police said.

The three Bulgarians suffered light injuries in the incident.
