US Ambassador: Bush Visit to Bulgaria was Exceptionally Successful

Politics | June 16, 2007, Saturday // 00:00

US President George Bush's visit to Bulgaria was exceptionally successful, the US Ambassador to the country John Beyrle said on Saturday in an interview for Darik News.

Beyrle commented the issue with the NATO missile defence system, saying all NATO members should be equally protected and it is highly probable for Bulgaria to be included in the shielded zones by the proposed anti-missile units in central Europe.

Many Bulgarians get US visas only to visit the country and they never come back to Bulgaria, which will slow down the visa regime processes, Beyrle added.

The main efforts in the fight against corruption and organized crime depend on the political will of the Bulgarian leaders, Beyrle said and added that George Bush called PM Sergey Stanishev Mr. Clean to imply that he has taken many difficult decisions in this area.

Beyerle refused to comment the news that an Arab sniper, member an Islamic terrorist organization, was arrested prior to Bush's visit.
