Sofia Mayor Still Wants City Holiday for June 11

Politics | June 1, 2007, Friday // 00:00

Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov remains hopeful June 11, the second day of US President George W. Bush visit to Bulgaria, will be declared a non-working day for the city's residents, after meeting with Interior Minister Rumen Petkov.

Bulgaria's cabinet rejected Borissov's plea at its session on Thursday, but the capital's mayor said after the meeting that he remained hopeful the government would reconsider.

The security measures are set to be on par with the ones during the November 1999 visit by then-president Bill Clinton and are set to further complicate commutes for residents of the already congested city.
