Earthquake Shakes Tonga Islands

An earthquake, measured 5,8 on the Richter scale, struck Monday the Kingdom of Tonga, situated in the southwestern part of the Pacific ocean.

The epicentre of the quake was registered 140 kilometres away from the capital city of Nukualofa at a depth of 6,8 km under the sea floor.

There were no immediate reports of damages or casualties.

The islands are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is an area of frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions encircling the basin of the Pacific Ocean.
