The leader of Bulgaria's nationalists, who are projected to secure three seats in the European Parliament, expressed concerns over the confident showing of its arch enemy - the party of the ethnic Turks - in Sunday's vote.
"The sad conclusion after Bulgaria's first MEP vote is that the country will bring four representatives of Turkey to the European Union," Volen Siderov commented for Darik radio right after the first exit polls broke.
Siderov, who shot to popularity in the latest presidential elections last year by making it to the run-off, once again blamed institutions and major media outlets of waging an open war against him, playing down and undermining the showing of his party.
"Each attack on the Ataka party shored up support for Ahmed Dogan," Siderov said, referring to the leader of the ethnic Turkish party.
The nationalists, who have capitalized on anger at crime, corruption, and poverty and have tapped on the ethnic debate, have assigned top priority to reopening the closed units at Kozloduy nuclear power plant and not letting Turkey into the European Union.
The nationalists' ticket is topped by Siderov's stepson Dimitar Stoyanov, who made headlines around the world last year with a racist jibe at a Hungarian Roma politician.
The second elected nationalist MEP is Slavi Binev, a controversial figure in Bulgaria's restaurateur business who recently dropped a bomb by getting blessed as an archon.
