Bulgaria's health minister and his South Korean counterpart signed a memorandum of understanding in the area of healthcare and medical sciences.

The document was signed Monday between Bulgaria's Radoslav Gaydarski and South Korea's Rhyu Si-min during the 60th session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva.

The memo will provide for cooperation in the area of health policies and management, hospital healthcare, new technologies and medical equipment, e-healthcare, medicines policy, etc.

The document will allow the two countries to exchange medical and scientific information, experience and solving of problems of highest priority. The two countries will also exchange experts and specialists.

The memo obligations are aimed at encouraging the direct cooperation between the medical institutions, the national centres and hospitals in Bulgaria and S Korea.

It entered into force from the date of its signing and will be valid for a period of five years.

The 60th World Health Assembly opened with an optimistic assessment of the global health scene from the new WHO Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan, and a call for global health leaders to build a "health legacy" for women and the people of Africa. "Health is now seen as a key area of engagement for foreign policy. Health has become an attractive focus for corporate social responsibility," she said.

The World Health Assembly is the supreme decision-making body of the World Health Organization. It meets in Geneva in May each year, and is attended by delegations from the 193 Member States. The main function of the World Health Assembly is to determine the policies of the Organization.

This year, issues discussed include: avian and pandemic influenza and the application of the International Health Regulations; smallpox eradication; noncommunicable diseases; better medicines for children; and progress in the rational use of medicines.
