Socialite Hilton Faces Jail Sentence

Socialite Paris Hilton, the heiress to the hotel empire, could be jailed for 45 days for violating her probation over an earlier drinking-driving violation.

Los Angeles prosecutors will also ask the court on Friday to suspend Hilton's driving licence for another four months. The maximum penalty is 90 days in jail.

Hilton has been stopped while driving drunk twice since January, and also failed to enrol in an alcohol education program before the deadline imposed by the court.

She pleaded no contest for reckless driving after being arrested in Hollywood in September and was fined USD 1,500 and three years probation.

Lawyers plan to ask the court to force Hilton to stay away from alcohol for 90 days, during which period she would wear a monitoring device that will chart whether she complies.

Hilton became famous for her hard partying, but gained worldwide notoriety when a sex tape hit the Internet. She has since released an album, starred in her own TV reality show and a horror movie.
