Bulgarian Ex-Broker Monk to Rebuild Monastery with SMS Cash

Business | May 4, 2007, Friday

A Bulgarian monk, who used to be a financial stock broker on Wall Street, has come up with a new way to save an ancient monastery in his home country.

Father Nikanor from the village of Giginzi is collecting money through text messages to save the monastery of Saints Kozma and Damyan, one of the oldest monasteries in the Pernik region near Sofia, Standart daily Newspaper reported.

Nikanor's campaign is about to be launched within a month. The priest is now negotiating with the mobile operators in the country. Using SMS more people would be able to join in with smaller amounts of money, Nikanor believes. He explains that Some BGN 300,000 are needed just for the rough rebuilding of the monastery. The temple was built more than 200 years ago and is now crumbling.

What another scheme to rip people off, this country does not need a monastry rebuilt. It needs roads repaired, rivers cleaned, garbage cleared to make this country a pleasant place to live not just for the rich but for all.

The "temporary withdrawal" of INSEAD Professor Ilian Mihov from becoming Bulgaria's Deputy PM:
resulted from a malicious political plot attacking him in order to hurt the GERB party

resulted from the extravagancy of his ideas about modifying Bulgaria's currency peg leading many serious economists to raise genuine concerns over his appointment

resulted from dissent between the GERB party and its allies thus showing tensions in the ruling majority
