Bulgaria Toughens Fines, Sentences for Pimping

Politics | April 26, 2007, Thursday // 00:00

Bulgaria's Parliament decided Thursday to up the fines and sentences for pimping and enticement to prostitution.

The new amendment to the Penal Code introduced tougher sentences for prostitution offenses following a scandalous provision that was adopted last year and named after a Bulgarian rapper and alleged pimp - Vanko 1.

With the latest amendments, enticement to prostitution will be fined with BGN 5,000 to BGN 15,000 and the offender may spend between two and eight years in jail.

When it comes to pimping, the sentence may vary between three and ten years in the joint and a fine of BGN 10,000 to BGN 25,000. If the case involves drugs or minors, is a repeated offense or more than one person has been forced to prostitute, then the sentence is between 10 and 20 years in jail.

Another change in the law adopted Thursday state that those who desecrate in any way the flag, crest or anthem of Bulgaria will be fined BGN 3,000 or sent to jail for up to two years. This second change comes after a series of cases shocked Bulgarians last year - one of a French porn video that involved the country's crest, and another of a bovine website that made fun of the anthem. The amendment was suggested by nationalists Ataka (Attack) after a folk singer by the name of Kameliya who wore a highly-revealing dress in the colours of the banner for a concert.
