Centre-right candidate Nicolas Sarkozy will meet Socialist Segolene Royal in the run-offs of the French presidential election on May 6, Swiss radio RTN reported on Sunday, one hour before the last polling stations closed in mainland France.

The radio station quoted the exit polls carried out by pollsters CSA and SOFRES, which credit the two top contenders with 26% apiece.

Another poll by Ipsos put Sarkozy in front with 27,5%, followed by Royal with 26,5%.

The two are followed by centrist candidate Francois Bayrou and right-wing nationalist Jean Marie Le Pen with 16-17% of the votes, the exit polls show.

Polling stations in rural France have closed at 6 p.m. local time (5 p.m. GMT), but voting in big cities will continue until 8 p.m. local time.

Exit polls cannot be published in France until voting has closed.
