Bulgaria needs additional measures to simplify its tax collection system, President Georgi Parvanov said at a business conference in Sofia.

The local revenues administration and the court system have to join in becoming a ruthless and timely mechanism for stopping the criminal companies from accessing the gray economy market, Parvanov said.

Parvanov spoke at a conference titled "The European Perspective Before the Small and Mid-Sized Business in Bulgaria."

The President also said that the fact that the tax administration believes that taxes are too low, while businessmen see them as high enough is a paradox.

A survey made public at the forum showed that 46% of the managers of such businesses believe that the country puts no efforts in encouraging the business. Some 53% believe that the state can help best by not interfering.
