Japanese City Mayor in Clinical Death after Shooting, Arrested Gunman Confesses

Nagasaki City Mayor Iccho Itoh, 61, who was shot at on Tuesday while campaigning in his bid for re-election, is in clinical death.

The gunman, a 59-year-old man, was arrested on the spot immediately after shooting twice at the mayor's back.

The shooter, who is one of the leaders of an organized crime ring, made full confessions.

The police are still investigating the motives for committing the crime against Itoh, who for a forth term as mayor.

That was the second assault against a mayor of Nagasaki. The first one occurred in 1990, when ultra right extremists shot at the then mayor.
