Bulgaria Gives up Search for Second Missing Sailor

Crime | April 17, 2007, Tuesday // 00:00

Rescue services have put to an end the search for a Bulgarian sailor, who was declared missing a day earlier in the Riga Gulf of the Baltic Sea.

Hristo Hristov, a mechanic on the ship "Vitosha" was found missing around noon on Monday. The rescue operation was called off Tuesday morning because of the freezing temperatures, which left no chance for the man to have survived.

This is the second time in just three days that a search for a missing Bulgarian sailor ends up fruitless.

Earlier on Monday, Ukrainian authorities said the search for Ventsislav Ivanov, 40, the second mate on the ship Milin Kama, is over.

His disappearance was noticed at the weekend when the ship was due to enter the port of Feodosia in southern Ukraine.
