Adobe Previews Flash Player, Microsoft Shows "Flash-killer" Plug-in

Adobe previewed on Monday its first Flash-based media player application, but rival software giant Microsoft chose the same day to present its answer - the Silverlight plug-in.

Adobe's Flash technology is the widest used for streaming videos on the Web, and the new player will allow playing downloaded content while offline.

Microsoft's Silverlight seeks to challenge Adobe's domination of the web-streaming segment and is designed to work with all major Internet browsers, either on the Windows or Mac operating systems.

Adobe claims its player was developed with content publishers in mind and will feature controls that will prevent users from easily swapping content.

The player is yet to go into beta testing and will be available later this year.

Microsoft countered with contracts already signed with Major League Baseball, as well as online broadcasters Brightcove, Netflix and Akamai Technologies.

Although which of the two products will be the more successful is yet to be seen, by presenting Silverlight on Monday, Microsoft ensured that its competition with Adobe will further intensify in the future.
