Germany's Fraport, which operates the airports in Bulgaria's biggest two Black Sea port towns of Varna and Burgas, reported strong growth in the passenger traffic at the two airports in the first quarter of this year.

"Fraport's two new tourist airports in Bulgaria registered noticeable traffic growth - although on a relatively low absolute level," the company said in a statement on Monday.

In the first quarter of the year Burgas had 3,201 passengers, up 99,4% compared to the same period of last year, while Varna welcomed 46,612 passengers, a 54,1% increase, according to the company's data.

The busiest time at the two airports are the months during the summer tourist season, when more than 3,5 million people are expected to use the two airports.

Fraport won a 35-year concession to operate and upgrade the two airports in 2006, pledging to invest more than EUR 400 M on new terminals and equipment.
