Bulgaria's citizens will be allowed to exercise control over the work of the Interior Ministry after the protocol, signed by Minister Rumen Petkov and the country's ombudsman Ginyo Ganev on Monday.

The public defendant will be authorized to investigate the cases of implying police force, illegal arrests and administrative gaps, which violate the human rights.

"By signing this agreement, the Interior Ministry gets closer to the ordinary people," the ombudsman said.

"One of the most important factors in our work is the transparency, as the supremacy of law is inextricably bound up with the citizens' rights" Minister Petkov added.

During the next few days a plan for defining the future joint actions of the two institutions is to be prepared. Experts will be appointed to coordinate the whole process.
